401 HOUSING AND INTERIOR DESIGN

Open to: Grades 11 and 12 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Where will you live after high school? Apartment, townhouse, dorm room, house? Interested in decorating a home, a career as an architect or an interior designer? This course will teach you how to draft basic floor plans, create living spaces right for your personality and life style, and find your color preferences. You will complete projects in a variety of areas including color, furniture arrangement, accessory placement, and house design.

402 HOUSING AND INTERIOR DESIGN II

Open to: Grades 11 and 12 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Housing and Interior Design

This class will take a deeper look into interior design with more in-depth projects, exploration into client relations and investigation of the design industry and its resources. We’ll work with advanced design as well as historical concepts and designs for kitchens, bathrooms and more. The use of fabrics, textiles and other materials will be included.

405 CLOTHING AND FASHION

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Learn about fashion trends and history and how design elements apply to fashion. In this course, a garment will be made following step-by-step instructions. You will learn how to choose patterns and fabrics. Two projects, one machine and one handwork, are required for course completion. Students are expected to purchase their own supplies.

406 ADVANCED SEWING TECHNIQUES

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Clothing and Fashion with a grade of C or better

This class builds on Clothing and Fashion. Learn how to make clothes you like and want in your wardrobe. You will use color, line, and design to help you look your best. Take this course and be exposed to the exciting world of fashion. You select projects on an individual basis considering your past sewing experiences, abilities, and needs. Students will be expected to buy sewing supplies.

410 GENERAL NUTRITION AND FOODS

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

What you eat is a decision you make many times each day. If you enjoy learning how foods affect your health, then this is the course for you. There are many class activities and laboratory experiences. To support the learning of how foods affect our health, we will be preparing foods such as quick breads, vegetables, grains, pastas and egg dishes. There is a product fee for this course.

411 ADVANCED FOODS

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: General Nutrition and Foods with a grade of C or better

Are you interested in advanced cooking techniques such as yeast breads, homemade soups, and meat cookery? Here is your chance. These areas are covered, along with foods and customs of foreign lands, garnishing and more. Many laboratory experiences focus on food preparation. There is a product fee for this course.


412 RECIPE DEVELOPMENT

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Advanced Foods or Teacher approval. Forms are available in the Guidance Office.

Through knowledge from General Nutrition and Foods, Advanced Foods and new information, students will learn the role of ingredients in different food types, research recipes, develop new recipes and then produce the product. They will publish the recipes and produce a classroom cookbook at the end of the term. This course is for students interested in the area of food science and the culinary arts. There is a product fee for this course.

413 INTERNATIONAL FOODS

Open to: Grades 11 – 12 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Advanced Foods

Come and take your taste buds on a journey around the world! We will be exploring food from countries such as Africa, India, Spain, Greece and more. Not only will we prepare foods from these countries, but we will also take a look at why the people from these places eat the way they do. This course will offer an in depth look at what people eat, how they live in different regions of the world, and why. If you enjoy exploring new foods and cultures, then this course is for you!

414 COMMERCIAL COOKING AND BAKING

Open to: Grades 10 – 12 1 Credit/term
Prerequisite: Foods & Advanced Foods with a grade of C or better in both.

This course will be geared to teaching students how to bake and cook for commercial use. Students will learn to make recipes in larger quantities, how to cost food and how to garnish food to make it attractive to the customer. They will price the food for wholesale and sell it to the business department to use in the business at the community center in North St. Paul. Students will try and develop new products for seasonal use in the community center. This will be an interdisciplinary course, which will build relationships and leadership skills for future careers. May be taken up to 3 times for credit.

0418 PARENTING ISSUES

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This course is for any student who is interested in working with children, being a parent, or learning about issues that parents face and challenges society seeks to overcome. Parenting Issues will cover subjects such as teen parenting, choices and decisions regarding sexual health and pregnancy, parenting skills, and roles and responsibilities of parents. It is a prerequisite for Child Development I and II.

419 CHILD DEVELOPMENT I

Open to: Grades 11 – 12 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Parenting Issues

Do you enjoy being with children? Here is a chance to learn more about them. You will become familiar with the stages of human development and principles of guiding children. You'll acquire skills in planning and directing the activities of young children while working and observing in a variety of classroom or day-care settings. This course includes planning and directing activities for children outside of class, basic child development, understanding the socialization of the child, and handling behavior problems. The skills you learn aid you in self-understanding as well as help you become better equipped to "parent" or care for children.

420 CHILD DEVELOPMENT II

Open to: Grades 11 – 12 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Child Development I and a GPA of 3.000 or better

If you are interested in majoring in child development, free college credit is available to you by enrolling in this course. Successful completion will earn you 3 college credits at St. Paul Technical College and/or Century College(an approximate savings of $300). This course is performance-based with emphasis on 32 hours of work experience outside of school with young children. The class work at North High will include an overview of child development and child development theories and their direct application to the school setting. Emphasis will be on developmentally appropriate activities. Students will create a child-care environment in school and develop lesson plans and activities.

422 FAMILY LIFE

Open to: Grades 11 – 12 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Are you interested in forming positive, meaningful relationships with others? You need to explore and assess your own definition of self, to find things that you value, to learn strategies to help you set and achieve goals that will bring meaning and satisfaction to your life.

Also included in this course are topics such as: dating, positive relationships, love, teen sexuality, and parenthood, gender differences, date rape, the dynamics of violent relationships, depression and stress, family styles, and challenges within families.


423 CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This course will look at how conflicts arise in our daily lives. What are our reactions when we are faced with conflict? Students will practice active listening techniques and communication skills that can be applied to relationships. We'll look at violence and how it affects our lives. Students will learn about the mediation process and have the option to become skilled mediators. We will study the uses of mediation in our society, within the criminal/legal system, during family separation and between governments. We will also look at issues related to anger management and bullying. Students must have an interest in the mediation process.

424 CONSUMER SKILLS: LIVING ON YOUR OWN

Open to: Grades 11 and 12 ONLY 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

This course is one of the most practical and beneficial courses you can take for it teaches you valuable life skills. Included in the course are: how to make decisions, how advertising influences you, tax preparation, insurance needs, using credit and credit cards responsibly, successful complaining, and getting the most from your food, clothing, housing and transportation dollar. In addition, numerous speakers bring their expertise and knowledge to class discussion. Calculators are highly recommended for this class.

NOTE: It is recommended that students do not sign up for both this course and Personal Finance since course material overlaps.

426 SERVICE LEARNING I

Open to: All grades 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Students will explore personal character and their personal goals in relation to society. They will research a few of the issues and problems facing the world today, use decision-making skills to develop a whole class plan to meet one of those needs in our community, plan how to do it, carry out the projects you chose, and reflect upon the work you have done. You will be required to do at least one hour of project work per week outside of the school day.

427 SERVICE LEARNING II

Open to: Grades 11 and 12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Service Learning I and permission of instructor. Forms are available in the Guidance Office.

This course will allow you to utilize what you’ve learned in Service Learning I and focus on your particular service learning interests. You’ll choose a service learning project to complete by yourself or in small groups to meet a community need that you’re interested in. Project work will be done both in the community and in the classroom. You will be required to do service project work outside of class for at least one hour per week.
